My uncle bought a 2000 ranger 4x4 5 speed with a 4.0 and it has antifreeze in the oil and we found a 4.0 out of either a '93 or '94 ranger and was wondering if it will bolt right in, including all the electrical stuff off the intake or will we have to switch some stuff around? thanks

As long as the 2000 is not a SOHC and is pushrod i think it should, others should be able to tell u more, but i see nothing in the tech library saying it doesn't.

the 2000 is a push rod 4.0.

wont work, the 94 is OBD1 and your 2000 is ODB2, i havnt looked that closely at the newer engine but i am sure there are many aditional sensors on the new one that the old one doesnt even have, not to mention isnt a 2000 the sohc? as well i believe there are differant heads with diferant chambers, which the computer uses differant mixtures etc for it(not positive on this part)

the 2000 we have is not a sohc 4.0. assuming there are more sensors on the 2000 could we just use the older block and swap everything over from the 2000 engine?

with some work you can probably make it work i guess. you will probably have to swap the upper intake off of it, ALL the wireing, and probably ALL the sensors. you may also have to put in the camshaft position sensor if it doesnt already have it(not sure what year they started using them). but definitally a BOLT IN swap.

so how old of a motor will go right in with no swapping of parts then?

Sounds like you have either an intake gasket or head gasket failure....Since you will need to remove the intake and put it on the older motor anyways, why not try to just change the gaskets first if there is no other aparent damage to the engine and save the cost of buying another engine as well as the time of swapping it out??

one of my brothers friends was the previous owner and he would change oil every 40,000 miles and he was driving somewhere, noticed it started to overheat and put in cold water. We tried to put block sealer in it but when it warms up you can here water pouring out of, i assume a cracked head or 2, plus it sounds like all the lifters are ticking and i think it has over 300,000 miles with the speedo not working all the time but it does run great otherwise.

I'd do a cylinder compression test as well as a leak down test, as these are pretty easy to do and won't cost anything...If it fails these tests then I'd swap the motor..

The engine runs great, it definitely doesn't have a miss in it but with antifreeze in the oil, the very minimum of 300,000 miles and the oil not being changed for 40,000 miles each oil change, or more and the lifter tick. My uncle just wants to find a different motor for it.

So, no one knows with no doubt if this engine will for him?

The motor should work, just switch all of the sensors, upper and lower intakes and you should be good.

I'm 95% sure they'd be compatible.
