i have a trans from a 2001 ranger and i was planning on putting it in my 1997 but i started looking at the trans and it has 2 connections that mi does not and it is missing one in the tail shaft that mine has on it. is there a way to make it work? both are 4r44e's. :icon_confused:

More than likely it will not because the electronics are completely different.

Not so fast.

If they are indeed both 4R's the newer should go in place of the older as long as all else is the same.

Give me more info or better yet, pictures. I'll give you a better answer.

It will bolt in, but the electronics more than likely are completely different. A '97 5R55E will not go in place of a '03 5R55E because of the electronics.

Typically there are more sensors on newer trannys. A newer tranny may be able to swap into an older truck and just have some unused sensors. An older tranny wont be able to swap into a newer truck because the computer will be looking for sensors that is doesnt have.

I am not saying that this will apply to this situation, but I am saying that Maurice may only be half right.

The plugs are also more than likely different on the newer transmission. I have seen 2 5R55E's next to each other (one a '97 and one a '03) and the main plug was different.

No. They are the same. Betcha you were looking at a 03 5R55N/S/W

Betcha I wasn't. It came out of a '03 Ranger FX4 and since they ONLY offered the 5R55E as an auto to the 4.0 in '03 and the '97 5R55E came out of Maurice's Ranger 4.0.

You are talking about the bulkhead connector on the LT side of the trans, right ?? Not the range sensor on the shift linkage ??
