Hello, I am drawing a definitive blank on this question, and I was hoping someone might know if this is possible, and if there are complications.

I have acquired a 92 Mustang 2.3L engine that had a auto trans. on it (A4LD I think)

I have a 98 Ranger 2.5L that is taco(270,000 miles) but, the Man. trans. Mazda M50D-R1 is almost new.

Can this motor fit this tranny. Obviously I have the computer, wire harness, ect.. for the 2.3L. I fear the pre OBD 2 may be a problem as well as the electronic trans. connections.
Any help would be appreciated friends

the engine will bolt to the transmission, but that isn't going to be your issue of getting all of that stuff together.

you are going to have to play a game or two with this setup, first off the crank sensor from the front of the engine needs to be taken from the '98 and put on the mustang engine, there is also a cam sensor on the cam pulley that needs installed too (don't know how doable this one is), place all of the accessories from the 2.5 onto the 2.3. I believe the 2.5 intake manifold will bolt to the 2.3 which will help some things. after all that put all the 2.5 wiring on and get it installed like it came out. swapping in the 2.3's operating system would be a nightmare, since the 2.5 has a mass air flow sensor it should in theory account for the difference in displacement, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

hopefully someone else will chime in that's attempted something similar

I appreciate you taking the time to answer... This is helpful information to me, as I suspected that trying to change out the wire harness would be problematic. I am considering your points of the Cam and Crank sensors, but I imagine the cam and crank have lobes for sensor timing cast or machined into the pulleys, shaft, or counter weights. While this may be possible it defeats the purpose of using it right away while I rebuild the 2.5.

actually, the crank sensor simply reads off of the harmonic balancer on the front of the crankshaft, once you get the crank bolt out the balancer pulls off, then put it on the other engine, the hardest part will be swapping over the front seal housing. I believe the cam sensor goes off of the auxiliary pulley, another pulley that's just a simple swap.
