Here's the deal:

The tech library says that 1988 & Up 4-Cylinder Rangers and 1991-2000 4.0L Rangers have the same Mazda M50D-R1 Tranny. Obviously the output housing would be different but can a laydude like me swap out the rear housing...will it all mount up etc?

My 91 4x4 needs a tranny, my 88 ranger 2x4 has a good one sitting there. Strength is the least of my worries - I don't do anything major at all with this truck. 4x4 only gives me traction in the crazy Canadian winters and that's about it.

Your thoughts appreciated;

Regards;

Kevin

No. The bell housings are completely different, not to mention that you would eliminate the 4wd in your '91.

Looking at the pics in the library though, it looks like the rear housing is the only thing different. So there's no chance of switching that rear housing?

I am telling you with 100% certainty that the bell housings are different. They look the same but they are not even close.

FYI, to change any 2wd transmission to a 4wd transmission you have to change the rear output shaft and the rear tail housing. The 4wd transmissions have a longer rear output shaft.

Thanks, just checking all options. The 88 Ranger I have looks like a bag of crap so ripping the tranny out to fix the one I like wouldn't hurt in the least :icon_cheers:

oh well.
