cant i find a ring and pinion for the d44 reverse rotation in 5.29s????:annoyed:

they always jump from 5.13 to 5.38

thats the gear i want! haha

i guess they dont make them... so now im looking at one up from that. for the ford 9" its 5.43 and for the d44 its 5.38, my next question is, are these the same ratio? will they work together ok?

No. You need matched gears or you will only be running 4x4 on really loose sand or mud

I can't see how they can be compatible with a different gear ratio. Something doesn't seem right.
It's not a lot of difference but I can see something wearing out fast if 4x4 is used on the street.

I was running 4.56 in the front and 4.57 in my 9"...no problem because .01 isnt a lot, but .05 maybe?

i believe the rule to go by is 4-5% difference but dont quote me on it, search it. its been brought up plenty of times

run it.you'll get a bigger difference from having the tires at a slightly different pressure.or going around a slight curve in the road.

thanks gwaii and i did search some slo-vo but i wanted to come back here where i knew i could trust some of the people

and of course 4x4 doesnt get used on the street unless its packed snow on it

and if you do run locked in on the street,it won't matter even if the gears are matched.every time you go around a corner the front axle takes a little bit different arc than the rear.this is why awd's need a center diff.
on 5.38s .05 is less than 1%.i've run 3.50 in the rear,3.55 in the front when i first made the ranger 4wd.while that's still .05,it's close to 2% on that ratio.still no big deal.

thanks man!
one more question, i hate to pull the drum and count the splines. you wouldnt know if my 9" is 31 or 28 spline? its off a 78 f150 ranger. 400m v8 4x4

31.

all the trucks had 31,as well as some of the bigger cars, like lincolns and some station wagons.the rest of the cars, for the most part, had 28.

yeah there were some straight answers, but then someone would chime in and say "i used to have this" or "i knew someone who had that" and "sometimes". they were just beating around the bush
