why hate on the a4ld?

^^^ so what was wrong with your a4ld?

me? don't know yet... just got it out today, ain't tore into it yet... hope to tear into it tomorrow. maybe...

ohhhh, keep us posted!

But seriously you should do a manual swap, you would be pleasantly surprised at how much nicer and more fun it is to drive!

i have destroyed a A4LD and a 4R44E......yeah, im that good. Neither was an entirely "Bad" tranny but niether is something i will ever plan to own again either.
They worked fine when i was nice, then i started driving like....well... the way i drive, and they both were short lived after that

In your opinion. :icon_thumby:

They can be fun, but I decided that they would be reserved to toy status after dd'ing one for a couple years.

nope.
thought about it. i have a md05.
but rush hour in Memphis? daily driving? i'm lazy. i know it becomes second nature and you don't realize when you shift. i learned to drive on a manual. don't want to deal w/ clutch when on trails/hills/mountains/so on. plus i only have 5 weeks or so till the Spring Run w/ MSJ at superlift orv and still need to do my d35 swap...

regardless... its not getting a manual!

Rush hour in Omaha was enough to swear me off of them... slip clutch, slip clutch, idle in first, sneak into second, stop. Slip clutch, slip clutch, stop. Slip clutch, shift up to second then third, stop.

It got old really quick. :annoyed:

They are fun for general messing around though, I did really enjoy calling my own shots in that car in the open and driving my brother's 6-speed Mustang is a riot. :icon_thumby:

My 3rd Grade Essay on Why I Hate the A4LD:

By ADSM08

I hate the A4LD because it has a torque converter. The End.

quoted for truth.

I HATE automatics. That's just personal preference, I learned to drive in a stick shift, my first car was a stick, and my second, and my third, and now my ranger, i have never and will never own an automatic if i can help it. Every time i drive an automatic, my right hand gets bored and uncomfortable, and i never know what to do with my left foot.

I know alot of people dont like driving a stick in traffic, especially when you have to stop and start on a hill, to me it's second nature, plus its fun messing with other drivers sometimes, especially tailgaters :thefinger:

see, that's all personal preferences... i never said an auto was better or a manual was better... people on here just need to realize that just b/c you want a manual doesn't mean i want one to. i'm not saying anything about you, b/c you didn't say that, but a lot of people are like manuals are the only way.. its not a truck if its not a manual.. and if my b2 was a manual i'd probably never put an auto in it.

when i started this thread it was not a manual vs auto thread... it was about all the people that say the first thing you have to do when you get a vehicle w/ an a4ld in it, is swap it out...and QUICK. b/c up until now i've ran several and never had issues with them..

you did what???!!!!!! lol

He smacked a deer coming back from the fields with a load. Radiator in the fan... bla bla bla. He then asked how I figured he should get it home. It's at that point when I should have said "call yer buddy with a big truck".
I did manage to tow it home with what I thought was no issues.... until I was in a heavy load situation and it went BOOM!!
And now we all know what NOT to do! :icon_twisted:

Sorry, no. There is still a torque converter between me and my power.

The only auto that I truly trust that doesn't say "Allison" on the side, is the Torqshift.

The middle Torqshift. After they got most of the bugs out, and before they started messing with them and adding a bunch of electronics.

There are a few good autos--ones that work straight out of the box without doing tricks. TH400, for example. It has a very well thought out shifting method which keeps it from seeing impacts during hard shifts and reduces slipping during shifts. It doesn't use a band for upshifts, simultaneously releasing with a clutch, so it's very smooth and durable. Smooth enough to be used in Rolls Royces. They last forever because of this.

The A4LD has such a horrible track record I wouldn't keep one. It's not a bad tranny when it works, but a soft rebuild won't repair it if it fails. I had that unfortunate experience in my pre-TRS days when I thought you could just replace soft components--like in about every popular auto made before overdrive and lock-up converters.

Well I found nothing wrong with the trans... Unless it was stuck in overdrive or something stupid.
