Why does 5g (cell service) seem literally no better than 4g

Your phone probably has this option somewhere in the settings. ( 'network mode selection' ). I can access mine only through a hidden menu that pops up after dialing a certain number. *#546368#*212#. If you can get to that, ' network mode selection ', you may have the option to switch from LTE to 5g. Maybe. I love technology, but I still yell at clouds.

I don't hate updates to stuff, I hate forced updates that don't do squat... like when they added round corners to everything on every computer which takes twice as much processing power for whatever reason and gains you jack... Then there's the "new and better" adobe reader that took off all usable tools for some reason? instant revert... Everytime Office updates they remove all the good usable tools on the top bar and make it near impossible to add back on, like the new right click menu on Windows that is near useless, gotta click on 3 things to do what you used to be able to with one, even with modifying the bios or whatever you have to do to go backward... They're making the experience better for the dumb people and making it harder for anyone using any advanced features at all... Don't even get me started on the One Drive garbage on Office and how it's the forced easy way to save ANYTHING, I want it local and the local way to be the easy way not your garbage system that I do not want... once it was started everything got slower...

I might be an old man yelling at clouds, but when were the old clouds armed to the teeth like the new clouds?

I just wish in this day and age I could get more than 1mbps internet at home without spending a fortune, it's really annoying with the current bandwidth required by dang near anything... it's slower than dial up was back in the day...

one drive? back in my day you had to turn the disc over to save

I run Linux (Fedora) on my daily driver computer. I have Win11 on one which I use for those things that run best on Windows. For me, that's ArcGIS, PhotoPaint, and Nikon NX Studio for converting RAW photos and geotagging.

I can get up to 2Gbps with Comcast here. The issue is Comcast is now the only option I have, so it's $126 a month for 800Mbps and that is the cheapest option they offer in this neighborhood. I can get speeds right around 1Gbps if connected through ethernet. I have an older 802.11AC wifi router and can get around 500Mbps over wifi if I'm in the same room as the access point. It slows down to about 100Mbps through one wall and 30 ft away due to the number of WiFi devices from the neighbors. I don't use Comcast's equipment. It costs $13 to rent their gateway. You can buy one and it will pay for itself by the end of the year. I installed OPNsense on an Intel NUC and that functions as my router, firewall, and DNS resolver. I filter ads and other crap on the internet through DNS. It works well. I have several switches I use on the network. I prefer ethernet over WiFi unless it is for something that is actually mobile like a laptop. I find ethernet to be faster and lower latency.

Regular 5G which is what my phone shows in most places in my town is kinda meh. When 5GUW is indicated, that's when there's significantly better performance.

As an experiment, I shut off 5G connectivity in my network settings. 4G LTE is the most the phone will connect to. I have not noticed a difference in speed and my cell reception may have been slightly better. I was able to send and receive text messages pretty much everywhere I was yesterday and today while in an area known to have bad cell reception. Next time I go up there, I'll try opening up 5G in the network settings and see if there is any difference. That should be next month.
