Why do many people buy in to the 3000 mile oil change myth, but not change other stuf

I change mine every 10k miles with a filter and a quart at 5k. I use Royal Purple with a K&N filter though.

Coolant, like gear lube for the axles and transfer case I think is one of those fluids that really dont need to be changed unless you find something wrong with it. Bascially if it looks good, then its okay no matter how long its been in.....as stupid as it sounds.

Na....it really does need to be changed....because coolant, like oils breaks down over time by heat and use. Even though it looks good it can loose it's potency and clog shit up and not lubricate as well. Not to mention not protect against heat and freezing as well as it should. Every 2 years or 30K.

You want to know what my t-case fluid looked like after 100K? Black with a slight redish/brown hue.

How about my diff fluids? Metallic dark brown......

Not to mention driveline components can build up wearing metal in the fluid, it's inevitable, it's gonna happen..moving metal parts....but does one really want that floating around in their diff? With bearings........?:dunno: That's not even including water contamination.

change all your oils on some kind of schedule or you'll end up with this stuff.

remember, the diffs are supposed to be lubricated for life according to ford...:icon_rofl:

but remember, most of us own trucks that werent designed to make it past 100k miles lol, thats why the odometers only had 6 digits(5 and the 1/10ths)

Ford put a special synthetic in those......'lifetime diffs'. Want to know what those axles and axle bearings look like in most of those around the 100K mark??? Most start making noise around then.......

Most manufactures design a vehicle to give 10 years of service MAX. But we are making them last much longer. The engines are lasting much longer......

And guess what?! Proper maintenance and frequent fluid changes help a vehicle last that much longer.....:thefinger::icon_rofl:

not too many original purchasers keep the vehicle past 100k.

lifetime fluid is not a myth in that regard.

my diff and tranny fluids have been changed 3 times in a week before. that will keep you out of water if you dont have to go in it....friggin expensive doing stupid shit you dont have to do. even buying in bulk.

i always manage to tear up water pumps and radiators/hoses etc so coolant stays fresh too. i actually run straight distilled water in the warm season because of it. just less crap to dump on the trail i need to clean up with a shovel and oil soaks.

a simple trip to a junk yard and some time disassembling engines will really shine some light on oil isuues.

The average lifespan of a vehicle is 7 years. A lot die before that, and those that last longer make it stretch to that mark.

Not because of mechanical issues, but because they were wrecked/destroyed in a storm... that kind of thing is what takes most vehicles off the road.

good point, i forgot about that haha, but mines an 02 with a 7 digit odometer and ford still says in the little maintenance book that came with it: the differential is sealed and lubricated for life and should not be opened, changed etc. or otherwise messed with unless its been submerged. personally i find that a little excessive, i prefer to change mine every 50k. . . about once every other year... assuming no submersion

I really think that's a stretch.....I would think that most middle class in America....and that's about all of America..... own vehicles that are 7 years of age or older. Just saying.

But I will agree that ALOT do get taken out by damage....reguardless of it being weather or driver error.

I was just trying to elaborate on 'lifetime' fluids. Especially when there isn't an oil or fluid I'd run for 10 years. And 'lifetime' can usually be defined by most manufactures as approx 7-10 years.... It's the truth......manufactures reguard most vehicles as use & 'throw away' and expect you to use a vehicle for a decade, then junk it, and buy a NEW one from them.

my 'Newest' Vehicle (in year of production) was 7 years old when i got it :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:

I think you just smeared peanut butter in there for show. That grease should have lasted 60 years....geesh.

i have seen something similiar to that before but cannot recall where i saw it , i just remember that it was all bad

EDIT : I now remember , it was in the gearbox on a Brush Hog 11' Finish Mower

i bet peanut butter would have provided more lubrication than that stuff...

Most people usually don't check the oil very often, and many newer cars still burn oil. My fiance's 2002 Beetle burns enough oil that I have to put a quart in it between oil changes that are roughly 3k apart. Ive read this is actually normal for this car, yet freaking ridiculous. I would be pissed if my 8 year car burned that much oil.

Is it a turbo motor that takes the 5w-40 synthetic? I sell that stuff all the time to VW owners and it seems like they all burn oil... they all say the same thing "I'll never buy another VW" makes me laugh every time
