Lately when I shut my Ranger off, I get a brief whiff of gas when I open the door but it quickly dissipates so I can't find the source. I've wondered about the charcoal canister or something like that. How do you know if that's still good? Any other sources it could come from?:icon_confused:

look at you gas tank after you fill up

because of the age of our trucks you may have the same problem as me. the vent tubes are rotted off the top of the tank. my 97 last year and 96 this year both did it. you gas see gas running down the side of your tank after you fill. see you almost can always smell gas. need to see a post on how to fix it. anyone?

If you have a post for a fix, I'd love to see it! I checked all of my vacuum lines and charcoal canister which all appear to be fine.

Take it to the station and fill it to the brim.. Then stand there and keep putting a little in until it simple won't take anymore.. Then give it a little rocking to see if any spills out and runs down the tank sides.
Crawl your butt under there and look/see/smell to make sure it is leaking.

also check your fuel filter ,its right under your door. it might have a pinhole or something

I seem to have the over flow problem as well does one have to remove the bed to fix these lines.

It could be slightly running rich due to an emission problem. Or your cats could be clogging.

The source has finally made itself known. The filler pipe is leaking. I just ordered one and will be putting it on in the near future.

It leaks like a sieve when I fill it up, and I still get faint smells of gas at times.

having the same exact trouble

So apparently we share the exact same issue. I loosed my tank this morning to see if i could peek above the tank and behind the heat shield. Not enough space. Ima try pulling the bed this weekend to get a better view. Did you r filler hose fix the problem? I hope I have something as simple considering when it gets above 102, my truck stalls out and wont start for 10-20 mins. Like it has vapor lock. Hmmmm process of elimination i guess

I just fixed this issue with mine. My sending unit was rusted and leaking gas. So I replaced the whole thing, fuel pump and all.

The filler pipe first started out as an odor of gas every now and again. Then it started leaking a couple months ago when I filled it up. It would only like a cup or two and then quit. Replacing the filler pipe did indeed fix this issue.

I didn't have any of the stalling issues though.

Here is what the pipe looked like:

Had the exact same problem. When I pulled my bed, there was a 5 inch split up my filler neck. Replaced with a $35.00 filler neck and no more gas smell and no more staling in the extreme heat. I also changes out the pump and sending unit while I had my bed off..

That's awesome. It didn't take long with taking the bed off, did it?
