Hey everyone I need some help I picked a 7.5 with a locker yesterday but when I was checking it out I didnt even notice it does not have a speed senor. Now what? How will I be able to tell how fast Im going or how many miles I will be putting on the truck? the axle come out of a early 80's bronco 2.:icon_confused:

No thats not what I was say the axle that is in my truck now has a hole drilled out for one in side the axle there is a gear that tells you how fast your going the one i was trying to put in does not have the hole for it or a the gear inside of it.

Ok after reading up about how the Speedometers work the axle i have in the truck has a speedo sensor (VSS) the axle I would like to put in since its pre 1995 welll it was ran by a mechanical cable that ran to the transmission tailhousing or transfer case. So I guess my question I had comes down to How can I get my speedo to work? Im sure Im not the onlyy one that has came across this problem.

Up through '94 Rangers used a cable for the speedo.
'95-97' the used a VSS in the trans (2wd) or T-case (4wd) for the speedo.
'98+ they used the rear axle wheel speed sensor. (I think they changed back to a sensor in the trans in '10)

That axle wont affect the speedo, just the ABS.

Yeah man. I'm pretty sure that's an ABS sensor. Speedo will work but the ABS light will be on.

Really thats interesting man, like I said Im not worried about the ABS light on as much as I would really like to know how fast Im going. Im confused because right where the hole is for that sensor there seems to be a gear, whats that for then? So the 96 speedo is ran by what? I hate being lost on something so small. AHHHH!!!!

Your speed sensor is in the tail end of your transmission. The sensor that you are missing is the rear abs sensor, they are less than $15 at autozone. Either take the sensor out of you old rear end, or go buy a new one, put it in, bolt it down and hook the connector up and you will be good to go...

That gear is the ring gear inside the differential housing. Here is a link to the rear abs sensor: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Duralast-Brake-Sensor-ABS/1995-Ford-Ranger-4WD/_/N-j1zrbZ8koh2?counter=0&filterByKeyWord=abs+sensor&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=352012_274332_6064_&vehicleIdForService=165643486 It's the same sensor whether or not it is 2wd or 4x4. The link is for a 95 ranger, but I'm pretty sure it's the same for 96 rangers.
