Im assuming they are all like this but im wondering why in hell are there 4 cats and 3 o2 sensors on my 2002 4.0? Seems like complete overkill to me

Because the front 2 cats and the rear 2 cats do different jobs. The 2 upstream o2's control air/fuel ratio and the 1 down stream monitors the cats to make sure they are doing their job like they should.

I imagine it may also have something to do with making an older engine with it's roots in the 60's meet today's emission requirements.... My friend's Camaro had 4 cats for the 3.8 it had and 4 O2's I believe. I remember him grumbling about it...
