who makes the best programmer for an 01 ranger with a 4l sohc auto 4x4, also any other good ideas to get quick horsepower?

I think you misunderstand what an EEC tuner is for.

The Manufacturer, any manufacturer, does not de-tune EECs so they have low power, far from it, the EEC is tuned for best power and MPG.
While these two things are on opposite sides of the same coin it is still the same coin, so if you were to modify the EEC tables there would only be a slight, you wouldn't even notice it, increase in power, but MPG would go down quite a bit.

EEC changes/tuning is needed if you modify the engine, i.e. change the cam, increase compression, ect......

If you still want to play around be prepared to spend some money.
I would suggest tweecer

Do not get "a chip", they are a waste of money.

RonD, I don't fully agree with your opinion on tuning. I have a programmer that reflashes the computer with a different tune. It was programmed by Bama and definitely resulted in more power and gas mileage depending on how far you press the go pedal. I don't think Bama is in business anymore but there are other tuners that still do it.

I timed some acceleration runs in second and third gear without shifting from one set speed to another using a stop watch before and after reprogramming. There was measurable improvement in performance.

I also kept track of my gas mileage before and after as I still do. There was significant improvement in mpg. I am not talking about major improvement but certainly in the 5 to 10% range.

In addition to these benefits, I also gained improved drivability. When it is time to have my truck smogged I return it back to stock to make sure I have no problems passing. I very much dislike some of the characteristics that comes with the stock tune and can't wait to get back to a performance tune.
