with the recent talk of bundy hill, and their requirement for flags on all vehicles, i have started looking for a cheap flag for my truck. where do you guys get them from? i thought about checking local places like gander mountain but i dont have high expectations. the place im leaning toward ordering them from is www.aditudegear.com

also, whats the preferred method for mounting these? ive seen some that you just stick down inside a hole, some have threads, doesnt look like they come with any real bracket but that wont be hard to fab. i read somewhere about people using air fittings to make a quick connect, that might be what i try.

what length and diameter is preferred? i know silver lake wants the flag 10' off the ground, so i was figuring on getting an 8' whip and making sure its mounted 2' off the ground. they sell 1/4" 5/16" and 3/8" whips, any reason i would want one thats really thin or really thick?

i know, it's just a simple flag, but i wanted to make sure ive got my bases covered before i spend money that i dont really have. any input is appreciated

I suggest going to a quad/atv/motocross accesories shop. OR look into quad/dirtbike accesories webstores for mounts. I got a flag mount from a local shop that I mounted onto a CB antenna bracket on my toolbox. Also get flags there.

Walmart has flags in their bike section for $5, I'm sure you can come up with something to mount them to, they come with a cheezy bracket that's meant to go under the wheel bolt on a bike. most off road places just require that the flag just stick up 7' high, I don't think they specify a location

The place the OP talked about, Silver Lake, requires it to be on the front bumper. and 10ft sounds about right, though I've never been. But plan to next year.

Around me, the dunes require a flag at 8ft at one place, 9ft at another.

first off, hit me up if you guys go up to silver lake dunes! me and my family go up atleast twice a year! its 10' mounted upfront at silver lake. um, try appletreeauto.com they have like main spot up at silverlake. for a mount, we had an old school 'burban, and from the front plate bracket, put a piece of angle iron/steel/aluminum or whatever there, then mount your flag. should put a tennis ball on it too, so it sits on the bumper but no damage.

yeah, i havent been to silver lake, but a few of my buddies go up there once or twice a year so i was figuring if i buy a flag, i'll make sure it meets their standards too. i'm heading up to bundy hill next weekend, thats the real reason im getting a flag. i'll check out a couple of the local atv places this weekend, but if i dont find anything ill just order them online.

how do they hold up?? will the smaller ones break? should i go with a thicker whip, or maybe a spring mount base?

Put on a 102' whip for a cb, and add a flag. Great radio transmission and a flag. How can you beat it?

Walmart. Orange bicycle flag.

the thinner ones just bend more the faster you go. i havent broken any yet. we have a few thick ones and some thin ones, just preference i believe. I think the thick ones look cooler, cause then dont like bend so much, more straight.

for the spring mounted base, i really havent seen one, but then again, i really never looked around for one.

i found them at the local honda east, 8' two piece, 1/4" dia, with flag and threaded mount for $12. now i just have to decide how to mount it, probably to my grille guard.

btw, those wally world specials look like junk. 5' long and $10 each

These are what we run when at the Silver Lake:

Their 8' or 9' long 3/8" thick. Picked them up from apple tree store across the street from the entrance to the park.

As far my mount goes its just a piece of 8" long x 1.5" wide x .25" thick steel flat stock with a hole to accept the whip and two holes at the other end accpet a small u-bolt that clamps onto the tow hook up front.

I know Firestik makes flags...I think the threaded bases are 3/8-24. So it would thread into a CB antenna bracket and stud. If you've got a grille gaurd, get a mirror mount bracket. It'll clamp to the grille gaurd bar and wouldn't be permanent and no new holes in a bumper or whatever. Might be something to think about...
