Whining sound

Hello all,

I have a 1993 Ranger XL 5 speed. Lately, when accelerating in gear, I can hear a whine that increases as RPM's increase. If I depress the clutch, it goes away. I have narrowed it from being possibly the rear-end. I know it's coming from somewhere around the transmission. I don't hear this sound in 4th gear but all others. The sound does not have a "grind" to it, just a whine. Anything???

Thanks,

I have same problem. It's your tranny, start saving your pennies for a replacement.

Have you checked the fluid level? The number one reason these trannies fail is because of low fluid. BTW, your tranny uses Mercon automatic transmission fluid. And yes, I realize you have a manual transmission. Don't put gear oil in it.

+1 for sure...make sure it's full, and like KennyKenny said, start savin up..but FWIW, my B2 whined for a couple years before it broke..and I'm not easy on equipment..

Yes, I've checked the fluid level before and yes I've found out that it uses the automatic transmission fluid. It's been topped off before through the shifter but still makes the noise. Another guy at a store said perhaps one or several of my synchrophaser gears that shift with each gear???

Thank you!

Hmmm...if you filled it thru the top, maybe too much oil? there's two plugs on the side of the case, the lower one drains and the upper is the fill plug. Over filling, at least with automatics, will blow seals. More likely a bearing than a synchro..or a bearing causing synchro wear...

Is it something that could be rebuilt or something by an amateur? I see kits and things at stores like Advance. I'm not illiterate but I'm no Ford mechanic. I work on air craft engines for C-130's in North Carolina.

Just out of curiosity, why was it filled thru the top? As previously mentioned, the fill plug is on the side.

It could be a gear or a synchronizer, but either way it's not something for a first-timer if this is your daily driver. Better to start looking for a reputable transmission shop.

i fill mine through the top, much easier, just gotta remember to open the fill hole when you fill it through the top, that way you cant overfill it, althogh you can get a hand pump to fill it the proper way

Yes, when it was last checked, and fluid was added or changed out, it was filled through the shifter. I guess you can do it either way and like 90rangersuper said, perhaps it's easier. I'm waiting on a response from this online contact that rebuilds transmissions. I think I saw the link somewhere on here...

Thanks!

Sounds like the input bearing... It will probably be fine, my dads put over 70k on his ranger with a noisy input bearing, it hasn't gotten any worse, my old tranny also had a noisy input bearing that I put 25K on and it never got any worse, I changed it because of other problems.

I think someone in the past has told me that also...and like you said, it hasn't gotten any worse or anything, but it is annoying and rather noisey. What is the actual part called and can it be replaced? Would it be in like a Haynes manual on how to replace?

Thank you!

hey guys sounds like the same problem and mine was the input bearing. i rebuilt it myself and had to replace alot of parts. more money than what it was probably worth but i think it was worth it.

Common reason for this whine is because the factory fill plug is in fact too low not allowing enough fluid in, or just enough, bare minimum. Filling a little over through the top is a good way to ensure not to develop this whine...
As soon as transmission fluid level drops a little it wears the transmission.
I'm already savin' for my new 1
Didn't know that bit about the direct drive though, helpful info!
