Unless the '91 is heavily modified (namely with boost) the 4.0 provided it is running correctly will by far be the fastest.

I don't remember if he said 2.3 4 cyl or 2.9 v6 do you think the 4.0 v6 sohc would still be faster than the 2.9 v6

Yes a 4.0 SOHC will beat the 2.9 to unfourtantly. But the 2.9 will put up more of a fight obviously then the 2.3.

If the 2.9's a manual it maybe closer then you think. My opinion anyway.

The 2.3 will beat it in lower refueling costs, Ive never drove a 2.9 but logically a 4.0 especially the ohc should still win in a race. No matter what engine the ranger chassis handling goes to hell above 90 mph.

Back when my uncle had a 00 evplorer with the SOHC. i ran him with rusty #1,

first run i nailed him outta the hole till about mid 2nd gear. He passed me and beat me by like 2 lengths IIRC

2nd time i think he filled the converter for a launch and was with me neck and neck untill, once again, mid 2nd. Beat me about the same distance

3rd time i was pissed i didnt get him on the hole shot and i dumped the clutch with way to much throttle and left with the tires lit up. He beat me all the way that time.

Granted an exploeer is probably quite a bit heavier then a similar ranger but there ya go.

Tell him it doesn't matter, your truck gets you where you need to go.

There are a whole lot of variables that can go into making one faster than the other. There is also more than one "fastest". Is he talking quicker 0-60, higher top speed, faster 60-0. It has as much or more to do with driver ability, than with the vehicle.

The gear ratio in the axle is going to play a difference but all things being equal, outside of the engine, the 4.0 SOHC is going to be the winner.

Being that trucks are generally not built for racing, it’s really not an issue aside for someone trying to say or find a reason to say they or their truck is better than you or your truck. Ignore them.

This. I've had mine up to 80 a few times when passing. White-knuckle time. :shok: I'll say the truck wasn't made for very high speeds beyond that. Ironically, it handles 70–75 mph on the Interstate just fine.

5.0s are cute.

460 FTW

Actually screw the 460.

534.
I have a 460 powered truck here. Back when I first started driving I found someone selling an 89 regular cab short box Ranger with a 460, guy said it still needed dialed in but he was running 10.5 in the quarter as it was. I tried to convince dad to let me get it but he wouldn’t let me. Probably better that way, I probably would have had an argument with a tree or something with it, being young and dumb. But the dump truck has a 460.

Eventually I’d like to make my 5.0 powered Ranger into a blown 331 stroker, that should be adequate for a little truck, lol

Id love someday to build a 400 and drop in a 4wd 1stgen for a trailrig. Ive always kinda liked the redheaded stepchild engines like the 400. Plus the 460 has been done.

Plus the 400 with that big long 4inch stroke can put down some serious grunt with the right shit done.

4.0 SOHC (I've owned three) has 207 hp which is almost double what an old 2.3 has.
Also an Off-Road Package (I owned one) will have 4.10 gears and they scoot pretty good. It won't be close.
That said, the 2.3 in my 2020 Ranger is turbocharged, puts out 270 hp, and if you floor it, breaks the rear tires loose at 35 mph when the boost gets spooled up.
Guy in another Ranger Facebook group took his late-model to a dragstrip and posted a pic of the timeslip showing 14.8 seconds, which is 1969 GTO territory and silly fast for a stock 4 cylinder 4x4 truck.
