My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
Which transmission do I have in my 2001 F150 5.4l 4wd?

Which transmission

They used the 4r70 behind the 5.4?

Both my expeditions has E4ODs.

I would have assumed his is a 4R100 or whatever the E4OD became

i could be wrong. with gassers the 100 or earlier e40d was E iirc. U was diesel application. always remembered e for e.

pretty sure all the expeditions came with the bigger transmission. pickups were different depending on rating.

thus the j mod.

I always thought any 4.2/4.6 had the 4R and the 5.4s got the beefy stuff (also the bigger rear end)

But i did google it and U is infact the 4r70w...and they were put in 5.4 trucks

They were stingy with the 4R100

Lightning and 7 lug trucks were the only ones for sure to get one. They also got a bigger rear axle 10.25 or something like that.

My '02 5.4 had the 4R70W. Normal 5.4's and IIRC some crew cab 4.6 trucks got the 9.75, everybody else got the 8.8.

So then I should be able to take the transmission from my rusted out broken frame 4.6l truck to put into my son’s 5.4l truck…. Or is there issues with that?

Because that would be the cheapest option for him.

Is there any difference in electronics cables and cooler lines from 97 4.6l to 2001 5.4l?

Never mind. A little research answered my question. It will not work and wouldn’t be the cheapest option to make it work

if the thru-connector is black you can get away with it.

1,9, and 10 will be empty....

possible certain late 97 builds will have the 98 up style wiring and hard frame.

Yeah I mean it could and my broken frame truck being a late 97 (sep 97) it likely would. But the torque converter won’t. When we were shopping torque converters it has to be a converter for a 5.4l and a 4r70w.

And when we called Veldman’s to get a transmission we were told it has to be a 5.4l specific transmission but the one from the navigator won’t work and the one out of a 4.6l is different internally and not as strong. Otherwise we would’ve had a transmission yesterday.

hmmm

the f60....like the old school f52 has several stalls....a high mid and low...

and for sure the 4.6 is higher than the 5.4....

but why is the trans 5.4 specific for that year other than stall?? the higher stall will affect performance i guess... there are people that would complain....

there was another vb and pressure change though in 99 or 2000. that is probably the issue. been some time since i have had to deal with these....i know it was 3 or so before they added the speed sensor up front.

i know i have installed crown vic transmissions behind 5.4s a few times in pickups and e series... some even converting to 4x4... the junkyard rebuild trick in a bind.

So according to the parts department at Campbell Ford its valve bodies, torque converter, and TCM are different for 98-2003 and a transmission from a ‘97 4.6l truck will absolutely not work because of wiring and internal differences

Bobby, how much extra work to swap in an E4OD or 4r100…. Apparently those are easier to find because of all the dead F250s around here
