Which Starter Will Work?

I find it concerning that none of the starters you had fit your flexplate... are you sure you don't have a 164 tooth in a 157 bellhousing? The starters are all fairly universal between 5-sp manual, auto, 302, 351w, etc. The 3 and 4-sp manuals were the only ones different.

I'm sure there are a million cheaper options, but I know this starter works with the JW bellhousing and 157 flexplate... thats what I have.

if the starters are all the same then you should be able to just get any of them. i wouldnt get to crazy with it just get one from the part store. install it, turn it over. if it dont work take it back. just common sense really trial and error

the starts between manual and auto are not the same. the auto starters go about 3/8 of an inch farther into the bellhousing. no matter what setup you have a permanent magnet gear reduction starter is plenty of power. those starters came stock after 92.

The starter from my '97 2.3 with a 5 speed worked fine on my '92 5.0 with an AOD lol...

It's' a 157 tooth flex for sure. I've heard the same thing about the 3spd manuals being odd ball. I think I will just need to fit trial and error style. Hopefully there is more trial and less error :icon_thumby:

Maybe the factory ones have differences, but in aftermarket starters a T5, AOD, C4 all take the same.

You think that's the reason when I measured three totally different flywheels and flexplates, they were all the same distance from the crank mount surface to the front of the ring gear? Had to dig in my old Mustang library for a great reference - makes no reference at all to which transmission is used.

UPDATE! After all this time trying to figure out why my starter wasnt working, I had it tested and it was bad :icon_rofl:

Got a new one for a 89 mustang GT automatic and it works like a charm.

SO that confirms for future applications that this starter from an AOD will fit on a C4 with 157 tooth flexplate (50 oz.) and JW Bellhousing Combo.

Thanks for the answer back, might help in the future.
