Which is the front, and which is the rear?

Hey all,

Im slowly finishing the brake line changeover in my 1994 Ranger, and I forgot which front/rear line goes into the master cylinder. Stupid me forgot to snap at least one picture before I started :bawling: so Im left guessing which line goes into which master cylinder fitting. Looked in my Ford factory service manual, but there isnt a clear diagram showing the lines and the appropriate connections...if anyone has a pic or a description, I would be grateful. I would like to think front goes into the front fitting, and the rear the rear one, but I would like to be certain....thank you very much!
 
The way I remember it; the front does ~ 70% of the stopping, and the bigger part of the master holds ~70% of the fluid....so the line for the front brakes goes to the biggest volume part of the master.

That makes sense....but Im not sure if the master cylinder shows much difference sizewise for front/rear....the fittings are obviously a different size, but thats to prevent mixup when the truck is assembled....
 
Then I would look at the size of the line. If one is bigger, I would suspect that would be for the front. Sorry I can't be more help, but I haven't done any work on the master on the rbv's.

Disk brakes take the bigger reservoir.As the pads wear out the pistons stay out farther to stay adjusted ,so takes more fluid.The drum brakes stay adjusted mechanically.
 
And now I know why the different sizes. Awesome!

aaaand I think I figured it out- the REAR port is for the front brakes, and the FRONT port is for the rear brakes....fitting sizes on my prop valve match the ports on the master cylinder.....I also re-read the service manual, and it showed a "basic brake function" diagram, and it clearly indicated the line routings....thanks for all the replies!
 
Yup, they are switched up, rear section runs the front brakes, front section runs the rear brakes. Isn't it wonderful how engineers design stuff so everything makes perfect sense?
