My Gibson cat back is 11 years old. The muffler is rusted out. The pipes still look fine. It is/was the aluminized single out swept design. I was happy with the sound and certainly how long it lasted. Anyway, I read through many posts and seems like there is a big following for the Flowmaster 40. Now, which case length does everyone use? Doesn't look like any are a direct fit for the old Gibson, 19" case and 25" overall. Does the length change the sound? The truck is stock except for the cat back. Thanks.

I did the same thing with my dynomax cat back. Hacked the the crappy cross flow muffler on and put the flowmaster 40 on. I had to add about 4~5" of pipe onto it to bridge the gap. I love it. Nice and throughty but not ricey loud. I have the 13" case and 19" overall.... offset in and center out. Running 2.5" pipe.

Thanks for the input. I just need to take another look at the Gibson and get the correct offsets for the in/outlets.

Thrush fully welded muffler from summitracing.com is the same thing as a Flowmaster 40 and can be had for much cheaper..

I see it is like $30 vs $85+. Does it really sound the same?

You said the Flowmaster 40. I was going to go with the Delta 40. How do you think it compares to that one? I have read it is a little quieter than the standard 40...

My buddy has a thrush on his 4.0 OHV I personally think it sounds kinda raspy, and not quite as deep.

I've personally heard the Delta 40 and Super 40 on a 4.0 OHV...I found it sounded better and meaner with the Delta 40.

But on a SOHC, hands down, Super44. With a very close second being the Super40.

I've had 6 total mufflers on my '01(dynomax ultra flow 40, magnaflow, cherrybomb glasspack, super40, original40, super44)...and found the Super44 is the deepest, meanest sounding one of them all.

Oh....and ANY chamber muffler will sound raspy on a 6cyl at high RPM's.....it's just a 6cyl....so it's half way between a real engine and a ricer.

I think I decided on the Delta 40 but if you look at Flowmasters website it shows there is going to be a lot of resonance in the cab. Not cool as I have invested $$ in the stereo...

You going to bring it out the back or sides ? I have both pipes out the back and it's not bad at all. I have no problems with the factory audio.

40 Series Delta Flow -Two Chamber Mufflers

This two chamber design incorporates Flowmasters patented "Delta Flow" technology. The "Delta" deflectors result in increased scavenging for better performance and reduced interior resonance over the standard 40 series with a nice growl outside the vehicle. Sounds great on late model performance cars with catalytic converters. Constructed of 16 gauge aluminized steel and fully mig-welded for maximum durability.

i dunno, sounds like it will generate LESS RESONANCE than an original. 'specially if you got cats which i hope you do.

Got cats, single side (behind tire) swept 2.5". It says its less but if you look at the graph it is on the high end.. Am I worrying about nothing?
