I have a 94 4x4 manual ranger with a 4.0 OHV in it. I'm replacing the engine, and was looking at getting a 96 4.0 from the JY with 88k on it.

I want to make this swap as easy as possible since it is my first, so ideally I would just be replacing the engine, and not the harness and computer. If I get the 96, will I have to get a new harness and computer? Is the 94 the only engine I can drop in without changing the other stuff?

Also do I need to get a 4x4 manual engine or can I get 4x2 auto engine?

the engine doesnt have to be from a 4x2

Those two engines are from different generations even though that are pretty much the same engine. The newer one is going to have sensors the older one doesnt. And the newer one is hooked to a OBD2 computer and wiring harness.

The older one is hooked up to a OBD1 computer and harness.

So yes you are going to have to take the entire harness and the computer with the 96 engine.

Contrary to what the previous poster says - you only need to get the longblock. a 4.0 ohv is a 4.0 ohv is a 4.0 ohv..............get it.

All the sensors / hardware will swap from your existing block over to the new one and everything will work fine.............

Also, there is no such thing as a 4X4 engine / 4X2 engine - they're all the same - just put your flywheel/clutch on the new engine and drop it in (although I would recommend a new disc / pressure plate).

Yup. Just strip the new engine down to the long block and bolt your stuff to it. This will likely include intake and exhaust manifolds, throttle body, injectors and all the sensors. Use your old wiring harness and computer. Vroom!
