I am buying a new alternator saturday. In my town we have. Advance auto parts. Autozone, and Carquest. Advance and autozone have $99.99 units and carquest $119.00. All rebuilt. Where would you go?

I would check the junkyards first...probably buy two of them for that price...or three...I ran one alternator (actually just replaced it) five years before it finally carped diem...it siezed on the day I spent my last $$$ on oil...but it only cost me $25...and I would have gotten another JY special if it hadn't totally carped out on me...

Go to Autozone and get one with a lifetime warranty

Be sure and do a thorough diagnostic when you install the alternator or at least do a load/noload test. A bad battery or faulty wiring can destroy a new alternator/regulator fairly quick. Make certain it is charging correct before you put alot of hours running it.

I almost always buy NEW alternators, I look for the Rebates like when NAPA has a 20 dollar off rebate for new starters/alternators.

I would prefer a Dealership OEM unit, since Aftermarket electronics gets cheaper and "cheap" all the time!

I just buy new, Duralast Gold or NAPA, I don't like rebuilds.

I would only consider a rebuilt alternator *IF* a new alternator isn't available and I need it *now.*

Really you should be replacing one alternator in the life of the vehicle anyways.

Dont trade your used equip in as cores, until the new unit is working. Use a local rebuilder if possible. 25 yr old Bosch eq was a lot better than the newer stuff. The G Wags used a Delco alternator, The old starters were Fords, The newer ones were Chryslers/ Mitsubishi. The least reliable were early Ford starters in the Jeeps. Most cars go to the junkyard with good stuff. I use used parts in the BMWs . I have no clue about the Rat's stuff. It has a new belt. I put a new Valucraft battery in and the other stuff is working OK.

I was going to get it a carquest for $119.00. Because they are close to home. But i found autozone had new Duralast with life time warrenty. For $144.00. A few more bucks. Seems like the better deal. Truck now running again. Thanks everyone!

Unless it is a regular laser printer receipt get it copied. After about a year the carbon transfer receipt is worthless because it looks like a new sheet of paper. Most places will require a receipt for warrenty.

Not Autozone...you're in the system if you sign up for their club card
