i have been searching and cant find any evtm's for my engine swap. i have a 91 ranger that had a 2.9l in it. im using a 90 4.0 and wiring harness/headlight harness from an explorer. i need to know what pins to change to get everything to work.

i went back out and rechecked the year....... your are right my friend. its a 9 of 90.... and thank you i just bought them.

It took me all of 45 seconds to find both of those, cut and past the links.

It's all about knowing exactly how to write a search "String"

In this case "1991 Ranger EVTM" and select the resulting "hits" in order of "price plus shipping, lowest first".

I think what was causing you problems was the 1990 Vs 1991 on the Explorer.

And for the record I've seen Build dates as early as 05/90, but they are still 1991's.

But with those two books you probably have all the information you'll need.

EVTM's were all I had to do a MUCH harder swap, a 1993 Explorer 4.0 and wiring
into a 1987 Ranger.

And after all that the only thing I've NEVER got working correctly is the WOT cutout relay for the A/C. If the relay is installed it trips out with WOT, but never turns the A/C back on until the key is cycled to off.

i have had 28 rangers to date all have been 302's or 351w. this is my first 4.0 swap. i had an 87xcab that was given to me, somebody swapped a 4.0 into the truck before i got it, but it did have an 8 bolt crank in it. which made a clutch and flywheel very expensive. i have a complete 94 expo harness. headlight and engine if you know anybody who needs a spare. free parts

For Your purposes 4.0 clutch is a 4.0 clutch, the only difference on a 1997-up crank is that it uses more bolts, the earlier 4.0 clutches bolt right onto it.

The the later 4.0 clutch is "different" it uses the "adjustable pressure plate"
but in an earlier truck with the earlier slave it's not necissary...

alright. here we go. im really irritated with this truck at this point. i have gone over the manuals a few times and everything looks in order. Im having a problem with the charging system. its not working. i swapped out alternators with another vehicle that i know is working fine still nothing. i try to replace the alt field fuse in the power distribution box and it just keeps shorting out. i cut the loom open and there isn't anything shorting out anywhere that i can see. one other problem that is getting to me is when turned off, the fuel pump and relays will randomly come on and cycle. PLEASE HELP.

if you look at the charging system wiring diagram in the 87 manual it loos relatively straight forward, but looks are deceiving....

the actual path the power follows in a 1987 is truely derangedIt runs from the battery, all the way around the engine bay (across the front) back to the firewall grommet into the dash, then back out to the connector fot the '87 alternator harness across the engine to the alternator... seems kinda silly considering that the alternator and the battery ar barely a foot apart...

The 4.0 alternator harness is all of 20" long and essentially runs to the 12v pos
terminal on the starter relay.

On my truck I ran a seperate wire to the fuse block in the dash and didn't
bother running a heavy wire back, because I have a tach instrument cluster.

How did I make the tach work?
I just hooked it up to the tach lead on the EDIS module and it worked perfectly...
(Basically I didn't do shit other than follow the manual:)

where you went wrong would probably be in the field circuit wiring

WHICD alternator are you using? does it have a Plug for the output power and look basically like your '87 alternator, except for the way it mounts to the alternator?

OR does it have a threaded stud for the output and an internal fan?

Look closer at the manuals I don't have the manuals in front of me and I have a sinus infection that makes looking at printed pages actually painful
But if I looked it up and foud your error for you you wouldn't understand how things work the way you will if you find the issue yourself.

Just take a step back, get something to eat and approach it when you aren't frustrated
Frustration and missing things are symptoms of working too hard and letting your blood sugar drop.

Whenever you feel like throwing or smashing things get something to eat.

NOT something sugary that makes it worse later...

Well, the first suspect is the alternator charging harness.

there is the ring terminal that goes on the starter relay
and the a connector that is inline near the back edge of the battery tray... INSIDE that harness is one (or two) fuseable links depending on what you robbed it off of.

check them fisrt...or simply make sure that the connector is latched.
