Not a ranger, but I've a vehicle that's had some good blow by for awhile, finally bought a compression tester.

115, 100, 100, 125 psi on the cylinders.

Doesn't knock or burn oil, I don't think it's immediately necessary, buy it is starting to struggle starting.

It's a 2.4L Honda i-VTEC with 143k.

Is it due for a rebuild? Or does it have maybe a few more years?

Thanks!

Roughly 10% loss from high to low cylinder is the acceptable limit. You have 25%. I'd say time to rebuild happened about 20-50K miles ago.

that is pretty low mileage for needing a rebuild... especially on a Honda. the hills around you must be wicked there in Colorado :)

What year is it?

Your compression numbers are very low over all, so I would suspect a testing issue first.

It should have 10 to 11:1 compression ratio, putting it at 180-198psi expected

And variable valve timing(VTEC)

Your engine should be in one of these lists: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_K_engine

It's an '03 CR-V, 9.6:1. Also I'm at 6000 ft, atm here is 11.8 psia...

Also that was a dry test. I may have not given it enough turns with the key

That's what I thought haha it was city driven in Seattle area for the first 2/3 of it's life.

Dry is fine and cold engine is as well

You loose about 3psi of compression per 1,000ft elevation

I use 18 as compression multiplier, 15 for sea level air pressure and 3 for mechanical compression
18 x 9.6 = 172.8
172.8 - 18(6,000ft) = 154.8psi expected, dry and cold testing

Wet test after dry test would tell you if rings are the issue

do the valves need adjusting?

Not sure, I don't hear any rattle or ticking.

Tight valves are quiet, too quiet. DIL's '99 DOHC CRV burnt a valve around 100k. Valves tightened due to valve seat recession
