When to change --- the day before it breaks... Just Kidding

I did mine at 165,00 and 275,000

Last time I took mine in it was $249.00. Look around more. Check the penny saver ads. Call the same shop you got the quote from and see if they have changed their price. Ex wife took the van in for a coolant leak I couldn't get to. Shop told her $550.00. I called a week later guy said he would do it for $330.00.

150k for the original, broke 40 miles from home in the morning when I got off work.

80 to 100k I change it now along with water pump and thermostat while I'm in there.
Also change the hoses and belt at this time.

Daily driver for work and don't care to break down for simple stuff.

Factory interval is 80 on my 97, I think.. unless you've had it since the last time it was changed, make no assumptions.

A mechanic friend of mine changed it at 140K and it was quite floppy and loose and definitely needed the change. Of course as suggested above, to change the water pump, radiator and hoses while in there. I say radiator since it was time to do it and just good general maintenance to do so. I don't think I could have done this myself even though I watched him do it. It was a little beyond my skills.

Most manufacturers recommend somewhere around 100,000 miles, give or take. It’s definitely time to change yours.

As far as the other recommendations, they might not be a bad idea if the timing belt needs to be out of the way to change the water pump.

Like also stated before, assume nothing was taken care of. Including engine, transmission, and differential oil. There are a lot of people who just drive stuff until they break with little to no maintenance until then.

Most people only change them after they break, 99% of drivers have no idea it needs changed or even exists till their vehicle suddenly dies...by that time though they've usually caused enough damage to the engine that its not monetarily feasible to repair....err they neglected it in the first place just as an excuse to buy a new car LOL.
