Can someone please tell me if I can replace 15 in. rims with 16 in. on my 1995 Ranger 4x4 without creating issues with the computer, speedometer, etc...? If so, what size tire would you recommend for all'round use (light offroad and highway)?

If the OD of the tire is the same then there will be no difference at all in speedo ect...

Welcome to The Ranger Station!

Many Rangers came factory with 16" wheels, like my 2000 4wd did, 245-75-16. I replaced those with 235/75-15 for more power and quicker acceleration. I use a speedo correction chart and my ScangageII to compensate for the speedo error.

My other 2000 (2.5 2wd, manual) had 225/70-15 and I put 245/65-16 on it and made it handle a bit better, but I could feel the extra unsprung weight. It rode better with the bigger meats but mpg dropped.

Speedo correction is covered well in the Tech Library (tab at the top of the page). It can be problematic with automatic transmissions (shift points change) and ABS.

What size tire is a frequent question with many answers. Knowing what you have now may help others help you decide, so take the time to fill out your truck's details.

My 3.0 engine, driving 4.10 gears on the bigger stock tires lacked power to me, especially up hills. If yours has the 4.0 engine, lack of engine power is less likely, although gears do make a difference. 4.10 and 3.73 are pretty common. If you have lower than those, you might not want really tall tires (>30").

MAKE SURE that the wheels you buy have the same size center hole and backspacing. Ranger wheels are hub-centric, meaning that center hole MATTERS. Some years had manual hubs and I don't know which had smaller center holes.

I ran 255 70 16 for awhile, I thought they were a really good size for gas mileage but also good enough for some light off roading or hunting etc. However you will probably get better mileage with a smaller tire, all up to you. I was getting 20mpg easy on the highway and 17-18 in town with a 255 allterrain. Now with a sticky 265 75 16 mud tire I get 15-16 in town, 18 ish on the highway.

I had a 3.0 auto with 4.10 if I ran street tires 245s I'd get almost 20 mpg if I ran off road 245s I got 15

stock tire size would be best for light off roading and highway use. 15 inch tires are going to be cheaper than a comparably sized 16 inch tire as well

I run 20" wheels and as long as your O.D. is the same on your tires, you'll be fine. My factory 16's were 30.50" so I just looked for the same O.D. and no speedo issues. Watch out for width though - if you get a wider tire, you can run into rubbing issues with the front wheel suspension.
