89 2.9 4x4 Ranger.
I was having some vibration that seemed to be coming from my front right wheel about 2 months ago. Kind of a wan wan wan wan. First I thought tires, because it kind of sound like big tires do when they go down the road, but it wasn't a constant, it was just like I described above. Faster noise the faster I went, but never a constant, always an on/off thing. I pulled the wheel and rotor, checked the bearings. They looked ok, a bit dirty but they still spun pretty good. I'm guessing someone changed them out sometime between 89 and now. I bought new inner and outer ones anyway, packed them and put them on. Seems like a pretty crap design since there was no cover on the outter bearing, so all the grease just flings wherever. Tighten it back up and put it on the road and it seemed to be the fix. No noise, smooth as can be. About a week ago the noise came back, slight at first and only after alot of stop and go driving, and after it had run for awhile. Now it's anytime I drive it, same sound same side. Wan wan wan. I pulled it all again, bearings seem as good as when I put them on, repacked them anyway, and went and bought the actual socket this time and torqued it to 35 inside, 150 outside. Got it back together and nothing's changed, still makes the same noise. It's real noticeable around 20ish, and it's still there at higher speeds but the wind noise cuts it out a bit. There's no change when I apply the brake. Any ideas?
