Wheel hop

I've had similar results, even way back with the 1977 F150.
now try modulating the brakes to keep the wheels rolling instead of locking them up.

in my experiences ABS works great on wet pavement, not so great on snow & ice.
there isn't enough friction on ice the get the wheels rolling again so they can (try to) grab.

I have mixed feelings on ABS. They are certainly beneficial in some situations and make not difference in others. At least they generally reliable and transparent. Unlike TPMS that either works or it doesn’t and costs extra money every time one gets new tires.

I have seen more 4wd/AWD stuck/wrapped around posts than FWD & RWD vehicles combined.
The 4wd crowd seems to forget that they can't corner/stop any faster and then suddenly find out that physics applies to them too.

With the way our snow packs down into ice at intersections, the FWDs do much better than RWD as just about everyone tries to get by with all seasons.

A lot of them get those wide mud tires as well and don’t understand that mud tires do not equal snow tires.

Wide tires make great toboggans as it is since they tend to lift up on top of the snow instead of dig in as a more narrow tire would.

And they tend to think their truck/SUV makes them invincible. Sure you can go faster but you can’t expect to drive the speed limit.

Mix all three together and you get a party.

Wasn't TPMS mandated by law? I thought one went on other half's '09 Rabbit, was tested (they have a sensor that can test if each is sending), turned out it was the TPMS computer (I was told) so I said I'll just go to junkyard and get different computer. They said, you can do that and put it in, but it won't work, you have to go to VW dealer so they program it in. I bet that costs a ton. So you end up with the dash light all the time, but it sucks. Another example of more complicated being not better. People seem to have forgot what a tire pressure gauge is. I suppose they can be nice if you have a leaky tire but when they/computer go bad, it's a nightmare.

I think sometimes the best thing to do if you're actually sliding is treat it like a sled, which it is at that point, and do as little as possible - no sudden steering or braking or acceleration or anything, just try to steer gently such as you can with a sled and hope the tires get some grab again.

TPMS is a government mandated system. Basically a system intended to protect people from themselves.

The why is convoluted but basically to warn people they need to check the air pressure in their tires. Part of the reason the requirement came about was because people weren’t doing that and tires were failing and causing crashes and roll overs.

There is more to it than that but that is the general premise.

Yeah the only thing is once they fail you get the warning all the time so then it's maybe worse than not having it.

I wonder if statistically it helped. I think it would be really hard to tell because there are so many variables involved.

Seems like if it's a safety issue mfg should repair/replace for the life of the car (stop laughing).

The whole idea is steeped in enough government overreach as it is, we don't need to be adding any more.

Exactly. The 2019 has a bum sensor in the one tire in the winter set. To make it even more annoying, it’s intermittent. Sometimes working sometimes not and sometimes failing in the middle of a trip.

I suspect a lot of people don’t have them installed upon tire replacement or never bother to get the issue fixed when there is a problem. So, does it really solve anything? I think it was just a feel good measure more than anything showing that the government “did something”.

If the vehicle is equipped, sensors need to be working for a sticker in maine. So It does SOMETHING here.. I guess 🤷‍♀️

But no it doesn't solve anything. People can just ignore ignore lights after all

I don’t think it’s a thing in PA. As much as they are in step with the the thinking of the New England states, you would think they would make it a thing. Heck, they only require emissions testing in only certain counties still. The rest only require annual safety inspections.

PA is such a nonsensical and arbitrary state. I guess that is what you get when it’s actually a Commonwealth and not a state.

Well let's say I get a new truck and take out the sensors on tire change. Will the light go on? Probably. That's annoying as all get out so then you are putting tape or something which if the light is behind the dash window you're screwed.

I remember the high beam blue light on the '68 Custom 500 was so bright we put black tape on most of it. But it was just on the dash, not under the window.
