Ok I just replaced my auto hubs on my 1990 ranger with manual ones. These ones definitely work now. but when I put it in 4H It acted like there are different gear ratios from front to back (bucking). That is my guess but I am not even sure if that would cause a problem. Does anybody have any other guesses on what it could be?

Lots of things could cause that. What kind of surface were you on?

dry pavement. and I just looked under the truck 3.45 gear ratio on the rear axle and I think the tag says 3.73 on the front dana 35. Do you think this could be the cause? and if it is should I be alright off road only or in snow?

Ok, no 4x4 on dry pavement. Not good for it.

If you actually have 3.45 gears in the rear and 3.73s in the front you are NOT ok to use the 4x4 at all until you get the gears matched. AT ALL. Unless you are in deep deep mud. You WILL break stuff.

ok thanks. So I am guessing the easiest way to go about this is to find a 7.5 rear axle in a salvage yard with 3.73 gears.

Find an 8.8, 3.73 are the most common gear for our rangers and expos.

Yeah, I'd look for an 8.8 with 3.73s. They are a bit more common than the 3.73 7.5 inch, stronger, and just as bolt-in. Just needs a little brake work.

Heck, if you can't find an 8.8 with 3.73s but you can find an 8.8 with other gears, I have a set of 8.8 inch 3.73s that I will send you for shipping.

Should bolt right in. Might need to swap the rear brake lines to the correct fittings for the larger brakes, but you might need to replace the lines anyway. Old brake lines tend to not come off nicely.

I mean if ur taking axle from exp take the leaves too less you don't need. Can't he just cut the lines and then he'll have all day at home to take line apart without damaging it

He needs to stay away from explorer axles. Stick to Rangers, the spring perches and shock mounts are different and wrong for a Ranger's setup.

And with a truck that old, it is probable that the lines on his truck will just break off when he tries to take the old axle out. Besides, new lines are always nice.

How did the gear's get mismatched in the first place?

That was exactly what I was wondering. All he did was switch from auto to manual hubs....last I checked, hubs don't have gear ratios. WTF happened there? You'd think the OP would've noticed that before changing his hubs out? :icon_confused:

And my X came with 4.10 L/S :icon_thumby:

I bought this ranger and it has been a pain in the butt! somebody before me changed a bunch of things on this truck and they didn't know what they were doing. I am just slowly discovering all of the issues. 4L does not work and the auto hubs were broken. I am pretty sure that the mixed matched gear ratios are to blame for both issues.
