As a former Explorer owner I now sold my Ex and bought a 1993 Ford Ranger 4x4. I have a lot of plans for this little truck to lift, get bigger tires and upgrade mirrors and rear drums to disk breaks also get rid go those seats and get something better...

After buying this things turns out 3 days later my tranny goes out and then my locker hub goes to shit.

Idk about this truck as they say that the 5r55e tranny are common for braking and a pain in the neck to rebuilt.

so... whats up?

Welcome :)

A4LD, 4R and 5R automatics are similar to any other manufacturers electronic controlled transmissions, no better and no worse.

The 55E destination means for a 4.0l engine
44E was for 3.0l or 4cyl engines(bell housing are different for 3.0l and 4cyl)

A4LD, 4R and 5R are all 4-speed transmissions
Ford added a faux "2nd gear" in the 5R by turning on the OD(overdrive) while 1st gear was still engaged, this narrowed the larger gap in ratios between A4LD and 4R 1st and 2nd gears.
So transmissions are all almost identical, just a software change in PCM(computer) for the 5R

Thank for your knowledge RonD. I need the schooling. I was in the import scene for a very long time.
