Hi All

What's the trick to getting the gear oil in the tranny while it's still in the truck?
'88 Ranger, 2.9L Mitsubishi 5speed, ext cab truck.

Draining appears very simple, with the bolt in the middle of the steel pan on the bottom.

The Fill hole appears to be on the drivers side up inside the frame rail and there's no room to get the bottle of gearlube to the side of the tranny.

Is there a pump of some sort or another trick I'm not thinking of? :icon_confused:

Thanks in advance for any help.
Bill

thats what i do, get a small hand pump, usually found in the oil/filter section of meijers (or wherever) drain your old oil first, i do it after coming home from a short trip, so its warm and stirred up. once its drained put in your bottom plug, and start pumping away, you can get a gallon jug of gear oil and just pump away until the fluid comes out the fill / level hole and put the plug back in. some remove the shifter and add oil from inside the cab.

hand pump or one that works with a 3/8 drill ( squeeze bottle and hose but that a PITA way.

I've tried the hand pumps, and it seems like they're a bit of a joke. They take as long to get primed properly as it does to actually fill the transmission.

I have a piece of hose, about 4ft long, that will just fit inside of the hole in the side of the transmission. I open the hood, and string the hose down beside the engine. I also have a nice little funnel that fits perfectly onto the hose. After I crawl under to hold the hose in the hole, I get a friend to start pouring in oil.

Pour in the oil slowly, and periodically check to see if the transmission is full.

If you can get the bottle anywhere close and get the nipple in the hole, just squeeze the hell out of the bottle and add it that way- or add a small hose to the bottle and squeeze it in from below.

When I've had the tranny out, I fill it up through the top at the shifter- but too much trouble to remove just to add a little fluid.

A couple years back I picked up what looked like a giant industrial syringe, about 2" in diameter and 10" long. I attached 3/8" hose to it, fill the syringe, pump it in. Works great for tranny and differential.

+1 It's called a hand transfer pump and looks just like a manual grease gun without the handle on the side. Everyone should have one as they are real handy draining and filling just about anything. :icon_thumby:

a hand transfer pump, or it can be called a suction gun, work really well for filling those things. putting a hose on a bottle nipple is too much hassle. plus suction guns are super cheap and can be used for alot of things.
