I have a set of 4.10 gears I purchased for my 84 ranger, I have the rear L/S carrier from an 88 7.5" and the pig from the D28. I know the pig won't work in my 99 IFS (I am looking for a housing with 4.10's if you have one).

But is there any difference between the 7.5" axle in my 99 and the 7.5" in my 84? Will the L/S 4.10 carrier and pinion work in my 99 7.5"?

I know the older housings are narrower, but I'm not aware of any difference between internals.

the only difference is the tone ring on the '87 and up carriers, it would fit in your axle, but your speedometer wouldn't work...

Why wouldn't the speedo work? I thought the speed sensor was in the t cae or tranny? I don't believe there is any cable or wiring going to the axle.:icon_confused:

Sweet really? you should totally get going on that SAS ASAP. :icon_thumby:

Later years had the speed sensor on the rear diff.

the tone ring on the carrier is for ABS and on '96 and newer I believe it drives the speedo, on the newer transmissions and transfer cases the boss isnt even machined like the older ones

You can swap the R&P gears, but not the clutches (if the '84 L/S is a cone-type, you wouldn't want it anyway).

take your 99 carrier to a machine shop with the older one the ring for the abs and speed is a press fit they should be able to switch em for you with a little work.

yep, that would be the thing to do, it would be a fairly quick job to make the ring fit with a big enough lathe...
