I need to know what would be stronger 1/2 mild steel plate or 1/2 t6 6061 aluminum alloy???

There's not a simple answer to that question,, it depends on the application.

Generally Steel is stronger then aluminum.

It depends entirely on how it's used.

Theoretically the aluminum is stronger, but there are technical challenges
to joining it to other pieces.

Aluminum can be more corrosion resistant, but is more subject to fatigue and stress cracking.

Aluminum clear advantage is weight. that is why till carbon fiber came out it was the material of choice in aircraft. it still is a main choice in aircraft.

i would go with steel just because some day in the future you will have wished that you made it out of steel...just my thoughts, you could do steel covered with aluminum diamond plate...that way you get style and strength:yahoo::icon_thumby:

For the side plates on tube bender?

Steel unless you like watching big pieces of metal break.

Frankly I'd reengineer all the bolts rollers and other pices and
use 3/4" plate "just to be sure".

There is a very short list of things that could be considered work
that I like doing more than once.
