Whats my Trans?

'88 to '97 2.3 4x4 ranger manual tranny is the only thing that'll directly bolt in, hard to find but these things aren't the hardest to get rebuilt, they're dang common since they are in all modern ranger manual tranny trucks

Short answer-no.
I'll let someone else with more knowledge than me do the long answer.

Nope, the input shaft is shorter in length on a 4x4 trans.
To change the input shaft you have to dismantle the entire transmission.

Might be able to fit an FM146 out of a BroncoII to fit though? If its a 2.9L or 4.0L ( maybe even the 2.8L ) I have been told share the same bell housing bolt pattern as your Ranger with the 2.3L. If the Bronco II is a 2wd that may be ok . They had a dummy transfer case behind the trans that literally had nothing in it. My guess is so they could use the same transmission trying to cut production costs. Which means you remove the dummy transfer case, insert your own and it may fit ?
DEFINITELY ASK AROUND BEFORE TRYING THAT THOUGH. I DON'T KNOW THE TRANS WILL BOLT UP FOR A FACT NOR DO I KNOW IF THE TRANSFER CASES WILL SWAP OR NOT.

using a 4x2 tranny on a 4x4 requires a fair amount of disassembly to swap the output's as said, it's doable, but depending on your faith in yourself you might not want to do it.

the 2.8/2.9/4.0 bell pattern is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT pattern than a 2.3, the M5OD trans has an integral bellhousing so it has to be from a 2.3. There's another manual tranny that's the same length as the M5OD but I don't remember which one it is, That tranny has a removable bell housing so you could grab one from any RBV as long as you can find a 2.3L bellhousing. The problem with a couple tranny options is that they are a different length which would require that you get both driveshafts adjusted or from the donor vehicle... with all that getting a 2wd M5OD and getting parts swapped around is more favorable.

Seriously.
That information was handed out in the fast response forum on here.
It was just stated that the 2.9L,4.0L 2.3L have the same bell housing bolt pater.
I'll try to find the post in a while but its been said more then once.
I disputed it myself until a few seasoned members on here told me different.
Then I took it as fact. Thats a little troubling.
