thats definitely an a.c.t. (air charge temperature) sensor. The dead giveaway right away is the fact that its in the top side of the intake manifold. It is actually rather necessary because if it gets clogged or goes dead then your computer will never register a warm engine and so it will run really rich as it tries to compensate for what it still thinks is a cold engine 10 miles down the road.
ps the knock sensors are down by the crankshaft typically..as that's where a 'knock' would be located..

well would it make your car run high idle??? cause it just started idling high

The Chilton's manual for '83-'91 Ranger/BII & Explorer confirms that's the knock sensor. The ACT is on the back side of the lower intake.
When you start the truck does it suck air in the hole? If not its the knock sensor, the ACT must be in the air flow to do its job, the knock sensor is threaded into a blind hole.
On most engines the knock sensor is in the side of the block. For some reason the 2.3 has it on the upper intake & it picks up a lot of noise from the cam & followers (false knocks) many people unplug or remove it to keep the EEC from retarding the timing & killing power.

ok, if its picking up information from the cams then wouldn't that actually be the cam position sensor?

It's not getting info from the cam, it can mistake cam/follower/hla noise as detonation & retard the ignition timing. Also the OP has an '88, no cam sensor (4 plug head)
