What's going on with Ford?

I say Great! The less the government has their hands in things the better. Chrysler doesn't NEED it either they just don't wanna pull the money out of their pockets...

Chrysler is owned by a private holding company with deep pockets. Why should they be bailed out with taxpayers money?

The guy from Boeing that now runs Ford. Alan Mulally, is in a whole different league than Chrysler's Nardelli and GMC's Rick Wagoner. That is a key advantage that Ford has over the other two.

I think Ford's involvement in the bail-out begging is that its competitors (GM and Chrysler) need it. If they fold up the common suppliers would be having real problems which will ultimately effect them. Rather unusual situation as they don't actually want any money or government involvement.

I personally think the bail out money is a disaster. They'll be back in 4 months wanting more and we'll have to give it to them now that we're committed. Just keep the ol' printing presses running cranking out more money. We'll never pay this all off in our or our kid's lifetimes.

You got that right. We'll NEVER pay it off, period. In fact, we are closing in on the time when all the tax we collect won't pay the interest on the debt. If you want to see whats coming, read "The coming economic earthquake" by Larry Burkett. He wrote it in 1990 or so, and it starts out pretty slow- but overall he's right on target so far. Its a hell of a wake-up call.

I bought stock in Ford three weeks ago. So far I've made money.
Ford's overseas operations are more profitable than GM's and Chrysler's I think.
All three are profitable in the other parts of the globe where they operate. Just not in the U.S. So what is the common thread?
1. UAW.
2. Congress.

I think they should have more taxes on vehicles not made in North America, I think the higher prices of imported cars would send more customers to buy from the big three, and if the foreign companies don't like it they can start building their cars in North America.

youve no doubt heard of the "big 3" shutting down for a month, dont know if y'all have heard about honda. they are going to 3 day work (production) weeks for the month of january (so far) i work for a supplier and we are going to 4 day work weeks as of jan 5. honda workers do have the option of working the 2 "down days" per week, doing cleaning and painting ect. but i and the of where i work are limited to 32 hr work weeks. im just happy i have this much, could have been worse, at the end of shift tonight, papers were handed out and depending how long youve been there you may or may not have a job. i think a total of 29 out of 400 got laid off. mostly ones with 90 days or less of service. i will have a year in come jan 7. going to have to live as cheaply as i can. at least i have what i do have........for now.

yea, i work at Midwest Express which is basicly Hondas wharehouse and we are planning for 3 days in febuary too but thats just a rumer as well as all temps laid-off by feb 19th but again thats just a rumer...

Yeah Hondas 3 day weeks are going to hurt alot of people around here. I'm lucky for now that my job has to do with the motorcycle plant which even though it's closing after next summer is still working 40 hrs a week for now.

i thought they had stoped all production of motorcycles i know the last of the VT bikes came though last month but i havn't been paing too much attention to that part of Honda
but non-the-less at least we still have a job and Honda said they don't plan on laying off any full time employees.

No they still make about 90 Goldwings a day. They'll close this summer.

That's been tried a few times over the years and all that happens is that the Big Three raise their prices.

and if the foreign companies don't like it they can start building their cars in North America.
Uh, they already do. Have been for years. In Southern right-to-work states where taxes are lower. Creating jobs. Making money. :icon_thumby:

yeah as US makers are closing plants Import makers keep building them.

Their reason seems to be that they don't/won't have unions to contend with. Their employees certainly seem happy enough. No matter what they say, the Japanese, Korean and German governments aren't subsidizing these plants in KY, TN, SC and such. I have to believe that these plants wouldn't be here and the big three would still be viable businesses if they hadn't given away the farm to the unions back when.....

Probably start a flaming tirade with that, but we're going to have to face up to the situation sooner or later. Argue over the blame game as you will, but the fix is going to be painful. Bottom line is cost. If you can't get your cost competitive, you're out of the game.

You're making me feel 'so good' that I jumped in and bought an 08 when the rumor went around that it would be the last year. My personal feeling is that the quality of the 08 wasn't quite up with that of my ol 02. Not anything big that I can put my hand on, just the general feeling.

That being said, I still love the Ranger as it is a great truck and just the size I need. A bigger F-150 I'd pass on just because of the size.

You Dont have anything to worry about. The Rangers never really lost quality the same way the explorers did after 04. I've driven a couple 08 Rangers and their quality stomps the 08 explorers. You've got a good rig:icon_thumby:
