Whats coating the frame?

Hey guys,
I'm going to have the bed off and be under the cab a bit this summer with repairs as I'll have this truck for some years to come now.

I have in mind a rustproofing compund for the frame, but am seeing some flaking of a coating on the frame already, espec around the front half. Looks black, like licorice colored ice cream shell.

Mmmmmmmm. Ice cream shell.

What is this stuff, powdercoating? Is it all along the frame?

Most likely is an undercoat that was applied at the dealership it was originally purchased from. Use a knotted wire wheel on an angle grinder and remove it all and any loose scale and rust from the frame before painting it.
 
Its either paint from the factory or an under coating. My Ranger has no paint or under coating, so the frame has a surface rust color. But its not cancer, so its okay. My mother's Blazer has had the under coating done. And its still there after 13 years later. No rust anywhere and still runs good.
 
If it is from a dealer, it's probably asphalt based. Asphalt base attracts and holds water, in this case right next to the frame.

Time to wire wheel it off.
 
anyone heard of using Herculiner or any other bedliner material on there frame
 
i would avoid herculiner as an undercoating. i have it in my 70 bronco and its chipping and pealing and needs a new coat. LineX or Rhino Lining would be better to use i would think
 
I'd pressure wash it and hit it with POR15 after it is dry.

That's my plan if I ever have to remove the bed (haven't yet on my 2000).

I hit the front end with rust conversion primer and flat black paint and wish I'd simply used POR15. I also didn't pressurewash the front end well enough prior to disassembly. In retrospect, wait until the inner fender liners are out, THEN pressurewash for a cleaner result. Learn from my mistake.

I'd have to be pretty bored to wirewheel or grinderwheel the frame. If the pressurewasher won't flake it off, it's gonna be there for a while.
 
I'd suggest LineX. I have Rhino liner in my '05 Dodge and LineX in my '99 Powerstroke... the Rhino liner has begun to peel and chip already and the LineX still looks perfect, even though it's 6 years older.
 
I'd suggest sandblasting the frame and using an epoxy sealer...then rust paint...then undercoating on any exposed areas...but only if you have plenty of time...and a bit of money to do it right...

Mine still looks like new...no rust has peaked through anywhere on the frame after five years of sitting...
