So my leaf spring front hanger broke on the drivers side. Unfortunately the gas tank is on the other side of the frame rail thus preventing me from just reaching around and inserting the new bolts. It seems everyone likes taking the bed off to replace it and most the time having to replace all 6 bed bolts and clips because they break. But wouldn't it be more cost efficient to just drop the gas tank. Plus it seems a bit scary to be grinding away those rivets next to a tank of gas. I could sure use a few opinions on this one.

Usually hangers fail from rusting out and since all 4 hangers have been subjected to the same environment....................

But if the other 3 look good then yes drop the tank, and replace just that one.

Also with tank out check out the rear brake line, it likes to rust out where it runs between tank and frame rail.

Opinions... opinions are like ass holes, everyone has one and most of the stink.

First opinion, if the bed bolts break just from taking them off they needed replaced anyway. Period. Same for the j-nuts.

Second opinion, taking the tank out vs taking the bed off is a matter of opinion, and situation. If you are taking out a full tank of fuel, take the bed off. If you are lucky enough to be working on an empty tank, and all your lines are in good shape, it wouldn't be too bad to drop the tank.

Third opinion, if you are afraid to use a die grinder that close to the tank you need to find someone else to do your work. I'd be afraid of a torch next to a gas tank, but not a grinder.
