Whats the better diff lock: arb air locker or detroit truetrac?

"As for a Detroit in the rear, I say go for it if you have an automatic transmission. I'd skip it though if you're driving a stickshift, get the ARB instead."

i have a manual and love my Detroit. not sure what difference the tranny makes really. why should i be having problems with it because of my manual tranny?

I also have a detroit with a manual trans, you just have to know how to drive it and you can't even tell it's there. I like it quite a bit more than my lunchbox locker in -20 weather as well, it would disengage completely and not allow you to move. My detroit has been completely flawless in the 10 months and 10k miles I have driven with it.

On three different occasions this year so far I have been in 4wd on pavement due to snow, and you need an open diff up front to steer going down the road in 6 inches of unplowed snow.

I've got a limited slip up front and even that can get interesting in the snow, With a spool up front you go straight on whatever surface it is.

detroit locker in the back and i love it, ive got a truetrac in the front and would deffinantly take an ARB over it just doesnt cut it for me but its better then an open diff for sure

The large amount of backlash built into the unit makes shifting rather harsh. Like holyford mentions, you do get used to it, but I wouldn't quite say to the point you don't notice it anymore. You will always have to feather the clutch just a bit into full engagement.
With an automatic, you don't have the driveline disconnects with each shift required of a manual, so it becomes much more transparent.

I have a Detroit in my Ranger, and an ARB in my BII (both manuals). I much prefer the ARB.

my detroit went in at the same time i upgraded from 3.45 gears to 4.56's so i wouldn't know if it was the gears or the locker with the difference in shifting. i know the detroit is very smooth when it engages and disengages.

as far as selectable lockers go, those OX units look like the sex. i wouldnt want to screw around with air and all the crap associated with it just for a locker...

otherwise for a REAL (not lunchbox) style limited slip, ive heard nothing but good things about the detroits...
