i have a 1993 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3litre with a Mazda M5od-R1 that i have to replace. im goin to a pull-a-part and a few other places later this week and i want to know what year transmission will bolt straight up to the motor and do they have to be from a 2.3 or can they be from other size engines.

In an act of desperation you could grab a later 2.5 trans and make it work. The biggest and most extreme difference is that it does not use a speedometer gear so there is no plastic drive gear inside the transmission and the output shaft housing doesn't have the hole for one but swapping them out from your old transmission wouldn't be a problem. Actually if you're grabbing a junkyard transmission you are most likely going to remove it anyway to make sure the thing is clean before installing it.

what size bolts hold the transmission to the motor? i see that there are two 1/2" bolt on the bottom that go toward the motor and there are a couple bolts that i could see that are in the engine compartment that go toward the back of the truck. what size are they and how many? i still want to know what year transmissions will work? its my understanding that 1988-1997 transmission are the same as long as they are on the 4 cylinder but are they the same on the other motors?

No. Only a 2.3 tranny will bolt up.
Sorry, I don't know what years will work. Check the Tech Library tab at the top.
I think the bolts were 13 or 15 mm.
13 is stuck in my mind.

The bolts have a 13mm head which is really close to 1/2" in standard size. There will be two bolts on the bottom and two on the top facing the rear of the truck and four bolts (two on each side) facing the front of the truck for a total of 8 bolts which hold the bellhousing to the engine. The bolts facing the front can get a little complicated mostly from trying to break them loose in a tight space but it's not really that bad. And like I said you can use a transmission from a 2.5 if you really had to and it's not that hard to swap over the parts from your old one. Hell if you get to that point just let me know and i'll take 30 minutes of my time to take pictures of how to swap the tailshaft housing and speedo gear since I have a 2.3 trans laying around that I have to clean out soon so that I can put up another ebay auction.

Any transmission from a "Lima" engine will fit, that includes the 1988-90 2.0(carb)
and the '98-? 2.5 engine.

As noted above the tailshaft housing will lack the hole for the speedo drive
but your housing, speedo gear, retaining ring and steel ball(used as a "key")
will swap directly over.

If you do manage to aquire a '98-00 trans you'll definatly want to get
the shift lever with it.

Don't forget that he could also use his older shift lever IF he gets the proper shifter stub to fit in the transmission (The longest of the stubs in all 98-00 I believe?)

The '98-up stub is the same length as the '94-97 stub, what's different is the mating casting at the base of the lever and the way the stub is "keyed"

the lever on the '98-up sorta hangs off the back of the stub with the retaining bolt across the front, this places the shift knob aa bit more than an inch to the rear relative to where it would be with a '94-97 shift lever.

I said "you'll WANT to get the lever with it" not NEED.

thanks guys this helps me out alot im goin in the morning and ill let yall know what i turn up.

i got one out of a 1993 with a 2.3 only it was the square body style and the motor only had 4 plugs not 8 and it was a canadian model. did they make both body styles in 93 or was the vin # wrong but the tranny is the same and its a good one so this is just curiousity.

just updating this to let yall know that the transmission that i got from the pull a part worked great it ended up only having 92,000 miles on it when i got to looking at the papers in the truck and its alot better than the old one with 584,000 miles on it. it works great and shifts smooth.
