What transmission?

Probably an E4OD, if it's a very late production unit it MIGHT have a torqshift, but I think 97 MY was the first year of those.

The torqshift didn't show up until the 6.0L diesel adsm.

The E4OD and 4R70W were available. The C6 was also still available, but it is only a 3 speed with no overdrive and not very common.

The 4R100 that you are probably thinking about didn't come out until '99 in a Superduty so they never saw the old bodystyle.

The 4R70W was out, but I doubt likely found in a F-250. Since the 4R100 was available in a heavy F-150 in '97 (rebadged as a F-250LD) I don't know if they would carry the 4R70W into the F-250's.

E4OD was until 98 then called 4R100 the torque shift didnt come till like 2003 when the new 6.0 came out and last year for C-6 was 1996 and 4R70W was available from 94 to 99 according to my handy dandy parts book.

4R70W was never behind the 351(5.8L) only 302 and 300. Easy way to tell is count the pan bolts, 20 bolts is E4OD and 14 is 4R70W. If it is a 3 speed auto it can only be c6.

I've never seen a 4R70W behind a 4.9.

the 4.9 always got the "big" transmission...
Like they NEVER put the AOD behind the 4.9....

It's not that the 4.9 makes any enormous ammount of torque, but the pulsing torque of a 6cylinder at low rpm can break stuff that a 5.0 won't break

5.8 auto trans in an F-series? either E4OD (aka E4OhNo!) or a C6's

Allan is right, i completly forgot, the 4.9 did not come with 4R70W, but if it has a 5.8 like i stated, should be the E4OD
