what transmission and how to adjust

ok so i thought my transmission was blown and its not it was just somewhat of a fail on my part but now i still need to get the pos automatic transmission to go into reverse it goes into park but as you go threw it reverse pulls like drive neutral doesnt work at all but it shifts threw the gears fine but in park it seams like it is stuck in between gears how do i adjust it im used to manual transmission so i dont know how to work on autos

What i have done in the past was start out in first gear (low) then moved shift lever up ___ number positions to neutral. wheels already blocked & park brake set. then i loosend the nut on linkage on side of trans for times when in cab lever is completely up (park) and tranny was still in gear.

i have also had it show inbetween gears but lever was in correct position which i adjusted under the dash on the indicator a small wheel on gear indicator behind the dash

so what loosen the linkage at the transmission (and mine is a floor shifter) while you have it in neutral and move it till it points straight up???
