What trans and tcase to use for 302?

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger and I'm going to do a 302 conversion. As most of you know, in that year range, not the easiest swap. Anyways, it's 4x4 and I'm looking for a transmission and Tcase that will bolt up to my 302. The 302 came out of a 2001 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. I've decided the simplest route would be manual everything. So I will not be using my electronic shift or vacuum hubs. I'll adapt shifters and levers inside the cab somehow. But what do I have for options on 5 speed transmissions? Preferably with a Tcase. Can I just find any transmission and Tcase from a mid 90's f150?

You can use a 4406 from an F150, and I suspect that leaves you using an M5OD-R2 from a 4.9/5.0/5.8. Not sure what you do on the ECM side at that point since the Explorer computer is obviously expecting an automatic.

Well I've got the ECM tricked. I shouldn't have an issue with that. I'm swapping the PATS module over too

Scobi, how’s your V8 5spd swap going?

I’m rounding up parts for a similar swap myself.
I bought 2000 Ranger 4x4 4.0 auto trans that’s not running for $300. My buddy’s giving me a 99 V8 Explorer with a bad trans so I’ll have all of the engine/electrical parts.
I just bought a M5OD-R2 trans out of a 90’s F150 4x4 4.9L with a bad 3-4 shift fork for $75. Then I found this thread
https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?sh...m/forums/showthread.php?t=173247&share_type=t that says to use a M5OD-R2 from a 97-08 F-150 because the shifter is mounted farther back than the 88-96 M5OD-R2 and better suited for the Ranger.
I’m going to talk to a few transmission guys I know and see if I can just swap a 97-08 shift cover onto my 88-96 trans.
Then all I have to figure out is what transfer case to use, I currently have 2-F150 parts trucks that I can scavenge Tcase, drive shafts and assorted parts from.

A ZF 5 speed is a good choice. I put one behind a 302 in my 87 with a NP205 T-case.

How is the fit?
The ZF is one BIG MF!
I actually have a low mileage small block ZF sitting on the shelf that I would love to put behind the 5.0 in my Ranger!

It was tight, originally I had a home made 1.5" body lift which worked and looked stock but it was barely enough room. I smartened up and put a 3" bl on and it's a ton easier to do anything mechanical wise to it.

Do you think there would be enough room for the ZF with a 2” body lift? I have some other plans in mind that would work perfectly with a 2” lift.

Scobi, I apologize if I’ve hi jacked your thread. It’s just that I came here today to ask the same question as you.

Yes, the reason I put the 3" lift on my 87 was because I swapped to EFI. Pleanty of room for the trans.
