what tranny do i have

i have a 2002 4.0 sohc, auto tranny 2 wheel drive. i know that everything i read online says its a 5 speed but the thing acts like a 4 speed. i feel like it doesnt use 5 gears in a forward pattern, does it use 4 in any configuration depending upon how your driving?

what's the build date.....it's showing either or? What does your dash say "R N D 3 2 1 with an OD button on your shifter" ? If so then it's a 5 speed 5R55E. If it doesn't have that on the dash it will be a 4R44E.

not sure on the build date atm, but it only show D 2 1. ok that answered my question. shoot that sux. how hard is it to swap it over to a 5 speed

You will need transmission, computer, dash indicator and possibly a harness. That's about all I can think of right now.

My 99 ex says PRND21 and it has the 5 sp trans,,there should be a trans code on the door just match it in the tech section to be sure.

i will check later, but if thats the case it really pisses me off if i have the 5 speed but i do not have access to 3rd gear

the 4R44E was never used on the 4.0.

A4LD, 4R55E & 5R55E all were, but the A4LD was phased out at the end of '94.
and the 4R55E was phased out with the introduction of the 5R55E in '98.

But ONLY the 5R55e was used behind the 4.0SOHC

So, by process of elimination...

but WTH would ford put a 5 speed transmission and only allow access to 4 of the gears?
and why would it have the shift pattern of a 4?

You can't manually shift into OD that's why
