i have a 1986 ford ranger 4x4 with a five speed and trans just went out , how do i tell what trans is in it or does anyone know

On the driverside middle of the tranny you should see a red tag about the size of matchbook. This tag will tell you the make of the transmission. Example: my tag is FM145 the tag will also show a code number, mine is
E67A-FA. My Ranger is rocking an FM145 transmission. If you can only read the code number. Go to the DRIVETRAIN.COM homepage, click on "manual transmissions" and when the page opens up click on the highlighted Ford. This will open up a list that uses the code to identify your transmission.

The tech library on this site will show you pictures and diagrams of the different transmission used in Rangers with general information about each.

Read the announcement thread at the top of the Transmission Forum. After you open the thread go to the bottom and open the section called Transmission Interchanging. This will tell you what tranny you can use.

Its a popular vehicle so you should be able to find a match in the local junkyard for a reasonable price. Try and find the exact match. A 4x4 trans needs a 4x4 replacement or you'll have to change alot of parts to make it work. You can use different trannys if they'll bolt up. But depending on the length you might need the driveshafts from the doner vehicle also as a shorter or longer transmission won't work with the exsisting driveshafts.

The M5OD doesn't have that red tag. only the mitsu trannys do.
