What to look for in a used 5 speed?

I picked up a 5 speed for my '89 2.3 Ranger to replace the badly worn 5 speed currently in the truck. I bought an 88,000 mile trans that was in a Ranger and old lady drove, blah, blah, blah... as the seller said. Anyhow, I want to look things over before installation. I pulled the magnetic plug and there is some sludge attached so I thought I'd look a little deeper. If I pop off the top cover where the shifter mounts will anything pop out or drop out? I never had one of these apart. I'm use to the simplicity of the 4 speed Toploaders. Also, I'd like to look at the tail shaft bushing and replace it and the seal. If I remove the housing are there any small parts that will drop out? Any other advice? How about a location for an exploded view?

Thanks!

Ive never worked on A mitsubishi but not much happens when you take off the top or back of an m50d.I think it's smoother if it's in neutral . If you need parts Transmission Exchange in Oregon shipped mine same day and good prices all in stock.

hey dude i had replaced the clutch in my truck same tranny
and i can say that when i took off my shifter to remove nothing poped out or anything but you might want to stuff a clean mech rag when you take it off so nothing fall in
dirt ect.

Top cover

I'm talking about the top cover held on with 6-8 bolts. The three Torx screws are a piece of cake. I want to look in on the synchros and gears. Since there are some electrical plugs that go into the top cover I wanted to make sure no switches, sensors, etc.... didn't fall out.

Its an M5OD.

Take the 12mm bolts out of the top cover, and pull up. Nothing will/SHOULD fall apart, drop out, etc. If it does, the tranny is no good.

Make sure its in neutral 1st.

Same with the rear housing. Take the bolts out and pull. No big deal.

That's the reassurance I was looking for........Thanks!

while your at it theres a good thread on the technical forums here about replacing the shifter bushings.....its real easy especially when the tranny is out. theres a rubber gasket on the top of the tranny where the shifter cover sits (the 6 bolts) you dont have to replace it just make sure its not damaged and sits in there right when you put it back together. the tail shaft seal is a good idea to replace they tend to be a great spot for fluid to leak....theyre like 6 bucks at auto zone. and getting them in is tricky unless you got like a 2 1/2" socket
