What to do with unwanted engines?

After the 5.0L swap on my truck I'm left with a couple of 4.0Ls and transmissions sitting around.

Initially I thought I'd hold onto them for a future project, but I've already got too many of those and realistically I would use these for something anyway. If they stick around here they are going to end up sitting outside and useless. I've thought about putting them up on FBMP, but don't want to deal with people on there. Wouldn't know what to ask for them anyway.

They are usable engines. One and the transmission was in my truck running when I started the swap. The other I believe had a bad head gasket, but never overheated so heads and block are probably good. I don't really want to throw them in the scrap metal pile.

What to do with them, is there a way to turn in as rebuild able cores or something? I know auto parts stores will buy old batteries as cores without selling one, but don't know if anyone does something like that for engines and transmissions.

You can call around to a couple repair shops or machine shops... I bet someone would want them

Yeah, I’d probably see if a shop that does rebuilds would be interested. If I lived closer I would probably think about getting them

if i lived near anyone, i would grab a 4.0 and transmission. i know where there are a ranger, or two, sitting that need engines and transmissions replaced so i could get them for a good price

I guess I've only got one trans to get rid of, it's a 4x4 5R55E for a 99 Ranger 4.0L. Might decide keep the trans since it should fit dad's 2001 4.0L SOHC. I'm definitely keeping the transfer case, it will fit the other ranger, and could be used with an adapter behind my 4R70W in the V8 swap if I need to ditch AWD.

The other transmission is a 2wd 4R70W, but I should probably hold on to it as a core if I need to order a built trans for my V8 swap.

Not in your own garden. Go find a place like the beach or near a creek or battlefield where people go with their metal detectors. Just think of some poor soul thinking he has a major find and digging down to that old engine. “How did that get here?”

I am in the market for a second 4.0L engine.... want to start prepping one for the one i have to go out... the one i have only has like 50K on it but i have little girls that want to be able to drive the truck so i am going to try and get ahead of the storm and start a fresh new motor build on the side for when this one does decide to go.
