so my truck has no compression in cylinder 4, probably a burnt valve. its also a little beat up and is gonna need brake work soon. not worth the money to fix it. So my question now is what should i do with it?

i had something like that happen to my ranger. about 115k miles i have a valve stick. so i took the heads off sent them to a local machine shop and they cleaned them up replaced some valve guides and it was only 175 bucks. put it all back together and now i am almost to 200k miles on it. and those 85k miles were a very very very rough 4x4 miles. i am not easy on trucks or cars and its still going strong. brake work is cheap too.

well besides the dead cylinder it is also misfiring on 2 other cylinders which may or may not be related. it has an exhaust leak, a lot of dents, a rust hole over one wheel well, a tailgate that doesn't like to always work, a header panel cracked in several places, i think it has a broken shoe on the back brakes, front brakes are pretty worn. My friend just had brakes done on his 98, ran him $1000. Mechanic that found the dead cylinder said that he could fix it but once you start tearing into the engine theres no way of telling what else youll find. I bought the truck for $800 1.5 years ago. I figure $300 or so for the cap and ladder rack maybe a few hundred more for the rims and tires sell a few more parts i could make most of that back and then just junk the remains and buy myself the truck i really want, a 98+ 4x4

I wish you weren't on the east coast, I could use the body

eh, well i dont know what yours looks like (im assuming beat to shit) but you can do better than mine.

so alot of people have said fix it, but haven't said why. Do you really think its worth fixing or do you just hate to see another ranger bite the dust?

buy what you want and part it out so parts can live on in another ranger.....Gets rid off a potential nightmare but keeps it "alive." Kind of.

thats what i was thinking. thanks

how much do you guys think i could get for it if i were to try to sell it whole?

+1 to the V8.

The decision to fix it should be based on how you feel about doing it and can you accept/financially deal with the end result being a failure? Shit happens.

Might be better off just swapping in a donor engine if you can find a decent one.

I wouldn't have just the heads reworked if my diagnosis involved a "probably." :icon_twisted:

Well i had a mechanic check it out because i wasnt having any luck diagnosing it. He found no compression in cylinder 4 and stopped testing there(save me money). His recommendation was a new engine since once you start tearing into it you have no idea what else your gonna find. If the rest of the truck was mint, id probably fix/get it fixed. I probably shouldve left out the fix it option in the poll
