Ok, I've got a 9inch in my truck, after racking my brain as to why I was eating bearings, it turns out the one bearing cap was not original, and therefore not machined to match the case, causing the carrier to move around.
I'm pretty sure this has done irreversible damage to the gears, the 3rd member is useless without it's mated caps.
So my dilemma is this.
Do I go find a 8.8 rear end and have it geared and locked?
Or do I spend all of my tax return and buy a $1200 3rd member ready to bolt in with Detroit locker and new gears and bearings from Currie Enter? It seems like a good deal, a detroit alone for a 9 inch is over $500, a member will cost 100 at the junkyard, and gears will set me back 250, thats 850 there, not including bearings and stuff, plus finding a local place to set it up.
If I buy an 8.8, it'll cost me 100 for an axle, 200 for gears, and might as well rebuild everything on it, so brakes and bearings, another 200 there, and a locker, another 500, thats 1000 already, not including labor charge.
I've been looking high and low for any axle already geared to 4.56 but nothing is turning up.
I've thought of just swapping members, but I'd still have to set up gears, and I'm not patient enough to do that, that I don't have time either.
Help me out here, i'm depressed seeing my truck on just 2 wheels.
I knew I should have kept my old 7.5.
