Mastercraft usualy is the older tread designs from the Cooper line. They also make Starfire (not too common anymore) and something else but the name escapes me.
I heard rumor they were bought out by a big name tire company but I don't know that for sure. They make a good tire, and have their duds just like anyone else.
As far as the big name brands, a lot of them are owned by a few big tire names. Goodyear owns a good number or "smaller" brands as an example. I think Dunlop, Kelly, and Continental are examples but it's been a while since I dug into the subject. So, I could be misremembering things and things could have changed since then.
