Can somebody explain to me what a shift kit does how it works and what not? im thinking about helping my buddy make a ranger drag truck and engine building im good but transmissions not so much

shift kits recalibrate the valve body. it causes later firmer shifts and higher line pressures to prevent slipage. if you can read directions you can install a shift kit. usually you change some springs and drill some holes larger in the seperator plate. sometimes also change accumulator springs or add shims.

Yeah That. ^^^

Basically it takes that nice car shift which is smooth and shifts around 2500rpms, and changes it to slam into gear fast and hard probably like someone who can't drive a stick very well.except more efficent.

shift kit

so would it be beneficial in a 4x4 thats on the street mostly but needs more power to get through long stretches of mud in SC. or should i just leave the transmission alone?

I've got a TransGo shift kit in my ranger, i'd recommend one to anyone. Best 50 bucks i've spent on my truck.
